Why It Matters Who You Take Your Mac to for Repairs

June 17, 2020 by Kyle Kenyon

Why It Matters Who You Take Your Mac to for Repairs

When you have an Apple Mac computer, repairs aren’t quite as simple as they are for Windows users.

Many iMac or MacBook users end up making several calls to shops just to find one that will take a look at their Mac. Several home computer repair shops in Framingham and throughout Massachusetts stick to Windows PCs only.

Why are there more Windows PC repair shops than those that also do Mac? It’s simply because there are more Windows users out there. But we feel that Mac repair is just as important, especially because Apple systems typically last (and are used) longer.

As of January 2020, the macOS operating system had 17% of the global desktop operating system market share, with Windows at 78%.

But in between the shops that do Windows only and the ones that are very familiar with Mac repairs (like Pro Tech Guy), there are those that will take a look at a Mac computer, even if they don’t have the right education or experience, just to get the sale.

Those are the ones to watch out for!

If you’re not taking your Mac to a qualified technician, you could end up with a host of expensive problems that cost you more than the initial repair should have.

Avoid Costly Problems by Ensuring Your PC Repair Shop in Framingham Knows Macs

Some computer shops that don’t specialize in Macs will still try to get your business. They’ll figure they can look things up online and “figure it out.” But if an IT technician doesn’t have the right tools or knowledge of the macOS and OS X operating systems, they could end up doing more harm than good.

Here’s why it’s important to only take your iMac or MacBook to a qualified and experienced Mac computer technician.

Years of Mac Repair Experience

The best computer repair professionals have years of experience fixing computers. That real-world experience diagnosing, testing, and repairing Mac operating systems provides a background of knowledge that can help ensure the right fix the first time.

When a home computer repair shop generally works mainly with Windows and doesn’t typically work on Macs, it means they’ll be lacking that background that can’t be duplicated by trying to look things up online.

Mac Repair Training

The Mac operating system and hardware components have distinct differences from Windows. You want to ensure the technician you’re working with has gone through the proper Mac-specific training and isn’t just relying on the hope that their Windows repair experience will transfer over to Macs.

Some of the things that knowledgeable Apple repair shops are trained on include:

  • Identifying system errors
  • Diagnosing software and hardware problems
  • Understanding how to properly upgrade/repair iMac and MacBooks
  • Learning the various Mac operating systems

Know Where to Get Apple Certified Parts

If you take your Mac to an IT shop that doesn’t know where to get Apple certified parts, you could end up with hardware conflicts from components that aren’t designed to work with Mac systems.

A Framingham computer repair shop that does Mac repairs regularly will not only know where to get approved parts but will also most likely have many of them in stock.

Have the Right Repair Tools

When it comes to iMac repairs, the components are encased behind the screen and opening the casing takes specialized tools.

Tools are designed that safely remove the monitor screen, but if someone is using makeshift tools it could mean damage to your Mac.

Make sure you’re working with a technician that knows what they’re doing when it comes to Mac repairs and has the proper tools for repairs done by the book.

Understanding Common “Mac Specific” Problems

Just like Windows users are familiar with the “blue screen of death,” Mac users have their own common issues that can crop up. Repair shops that aren’t familiar with Macs won’t know about these or have the experience to fix them.

Common issues, like dark screen boot problems on a MacBook, can often be easily fixed if the technician is familiar with Mac and has seen and repaired an error multiple times before for other customers.

Recall Information

Often a user is unaware of a recall on a system component, like a graphics card. Then, when they experience an issue caused by that component, they end up taking it in to be fixed not realizing it shouldn’t cost them anything.

A technician that regularly works in the Mac world, will be up-to-date on all recalls and how to get parts replaced under a recall without any costs and can let you know about it as soon as they see the problem.
